Climate Change is Biblical

A major argument about climate change is that the earth's survival depends on human actions, such as reducing the release of greenhouse gases, to avoid catastrophic impacts on the global environment. While it’s true that in Genesis 1 and 2, God commanded humanity to fill the earth, subdue it, and care for it, Scripture makes it clear that God alone has ultimate control over the climate and the atmosphere.
Psalm 135:6-7
“Whatever the Lord pleases He does, in heaven and in earth, in the seas and in all deep places. He causes the vapors to ascend from the ends of the earth; He makes lightning for the rain; He brings the wind out of His treasuries.”
While human behavior impacts the environment, we do not ultimately control what happens in the atmosphere or the climate. God alone holds that power.
Psalm 107:33-35
“He turns rivers into a wilderness, and the watersprings into dry ground; a fruitful land into barrenness, for the wickedness of those who dwell in it. He turns a wilderness into pools of water, and dry land into watersprings.”
Additionally, the Bible makes it clear that heaven, the atmosphere, and the earth will one day pass away. Regardless of humanity’s environmental efforts, the current earth is destined for destruction.
Matthew 24:35
“Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.”
The reason for this destiny is rooted in the curse brought upon creation as a result of humanity’s rebellion in the Garden of Eden. The sin of Adam and Eve fundamentally altered the earth’s original nature.
Genesis 3:17-18
“Then to Adam He said, ‘Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, “You shall not eat of it”: cursed is the ground for your sake; in toil you shall eat of it all the days of your life. Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you, and you shall eat the herb of the field.’”
However, the Bible also offers hope for a future where God will create a new heaven and a new earth, free from the curse of sin. In Revelation 21 and 22, this new creation is described, along with the promise that “there shall be no more curse.”
Revelation 21:1
“Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea.”
Revelation 22:3
“And there shall be no more curse, but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it, and His servants shall serve Him.”
Understanding that climate change is biblical and that the present earth is destined to pass away, our focus should shift to the climate of our hearts. The true priority is ensuring that we make choices aligned with God’s will so that our names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life, allowing us to partake in the new heaven and the new earth.
Revelation 21:27
“But there shall by no means enter it anything that defiles, or causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.”
